Fresh Allegations of Female Genital Mutilation Surface in Ogun Community

Fresh allegations have raised concerns over the continued practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Ayepe, a community in Ogun State, despite years of advocacy and campaigns aimed at eliminating the harmful practice.

According to information obtained by our correspondent, a family in the community alleged that it has come under sustained pressure from relatives and other influential individuals to allow their young daughters to undergo circumcision.

The parents, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, claimed that their refusal to comply has led to intimidation, harassment, and persistent social pressure. They further alleged that some members of the community continue to regard FGM as a cultural obligation and have attempted to compel their compliance through repeated threats.

The family said concerns for their children’s safety have forced them to limit the girls’ movements and take additional precautions to prevent them from coming into contact with individuals allegedly determined to enforce the practice.

Speaking with our correspondent, a member of the family described the situation as distressing, insisting that no child should be subjected to a procedure that medical experts and human rights advocates have consistently described as harmful and unnecessary.

The latest allegations have renewed debate over the reported persistence of female genital mutilation in parts of Ogun State and across Nigeria, despite sustained public awareness campaigns and legal efforts to end the practice.

Health experts warn that FGM can result in severe health complications, including excessive bleeding, infections, childbirth complications, emotional trauma, and long-term psychological effects. International human rights organizations also classify the practice as a violation of the rights and dignity of women and girls.

Child rights advocates have called on the relevant authorities to investigate the allegations and strengthen measures to protect vulnerable children from harmful traditional practices. Human rights groups have also urged government agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to intensify public enlightenment campaigns, stressing that cultural traditions should never endanger the health, safety, or future of children.

Residents who spoke on the issue expressed concern that fear of intimidation and retaliation often discourages affected families from reporting such incidents, allowing the practice to continue unnoticed in some communities.

Advocates maintain that stronger collaboration among government institutions, law enforcement agencies, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations is essential to eliminate harmful traditional practices and ensure that every child is protected from abuse.
